May 2025 Commencement
The Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University is pleased to hold our College Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 18, 2025 at 12:30 pm, at the WVU Coliseum.
All graduates must register in order to participate in commencement. No tickets are required for admission and there is no limits on the number of guests a graduate may invite to the ceremony.
Registering for Commencement
Students who plan to participate in May Commencement should submit the appropriate registration form by May 9, 2025. Before submitting a registration form, please read the Who May Participate section below.
Statler College Spring Commencement Ceremony RegistrationAcademic Regalia
A cap and gown are required to participate in commencement and can be purchased online from Herff Jones or in person from any WVU Bookstore location.
Tassels
- Statler College BS & MS Graduates: Cap (mortarboard) with orange tassel
- >Statler College Ph.D. Graduates: Cap (tam) with dark blue tassel
Undergraduate students should position their tassel on the right side of their cap.
Graduate students should position their tassel on the left side of their cap and carry (not wear) their hood to the ceremony.
Honors Cords
- Undergraduate degree students who will graduate with Latin honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) will receive their honors cords at the Statler College Academic Honors Day Ceremony on April 11, 2025.
- Honors cord can also be picked up from Clay Lohan in the Office of Academics and Student Performance (MRB 377A).
Tips & Reminders
- Caps, gowns, tassels, and cords will not be available for distribution at Commencement. Please remember to bring all items with you to the ceremony.
- A list of acceptable adornments worn with academic regalia can be found on the WVU Graduation – What to Wear page.
- Dressing in light, breathable fabrics is advised. Comfortable shoes are highly recommended!
Instructions for Participants
Commencement participants should (students and faculty) should report to the Basketball Practice Facility adjacent to the Country Roads gate of the Coliseum one hour prior to the ceremony start time to check-in and line-up for the processional. Event staff and University marshals will be on hand to guide graduates through the ceremony.
Please do not bring anything with you into the Basketball Practice Facility that you cannot keep with you during the ceremony. Graduates will not be permitted to re-enter the facility once exiting during the procession.
Friends and family of graduates should find a seat in the Coliseum upon arrival and not follow their graduate to the check-in area. Only graduates and faculty are permitted to enter the Basketball Practice Facility.
Keep in mind the Clear Bag Policy will be in effect for Commencement. Please share this policy in advance with friends and family attending the ceremony.
Ceremony Information
Degree candidates will line up for the processional by department, then alphabetically by last name. University marshals will lead the processional of graduates and faculty form the Basketball Practice Facility to the arena of the Coliseum. After the keynote address, marshals will cue degree candidates when it is time to rise from their seats and approach the stage for recognition.
Degree candidates will hand their Reader Card (distributed during check-in) to the announcer and, as their name is announced, proceed across the stage to receive a diploma cover and congratulations from Dean Mago. Students should return to their seat after exiting the stage.
Doctoral and master’s degree candidates will be hooded by their adviser and/or dean at far end of stage before proceeding across the stage.
The ceremony will conclude with the singing of Country Roads.
Photography
West Virginia University has partnered with GradImages to help capture the special memories of graduation. A photograph of each student will be taken as he or she crosses the stage. Proofs will be emailed to the student within 72 hours of the ceremony.
